Steve Diet Goedde -- Dream Menagerie
The windows just might fog up over at Laura Henkel Fine Art's grand reopening, under the new name Sin City Gallery. The name, Henkel says, better represents the gallery's "sexy, sophisticated art."
The gallery's February debut displays a 20-year retrospective of the award-winning fetish photographer Steve Diet Goedde. Similar to predecessors, such as Robert Mapplethorpe, Goedde's silver-gelatine images capitalize on the use of natural light, lending the racy subject matter a surprising, sublime quality. Staying within the same visual key, images such as "Micki" tug humorously, as a petite blond attempts to fit herself into a small suitcase sitting on a bed. The presentation leans its focus towards fetish attire with photographs such as "Masuimi," which emphasizes the slender-ribbed constriction of a corset, and "Latex Gloves," which examines the liquid gloss of black latex gloves. The exhibition is part of Henkel's ongoing artistic mission to "break down notions of segregation associated with explicit art." JK

Sin City Gallery Manager Lou Lou Roxy also commented, "Not only are people contacting us for Steve’s work, we have had numerous online and telephone sales for Francois Dubeau, Ross Johnston and Bobby Logic due to all the media attention. People seem to enjoy our website. Many were not able to attend the exhibition in person due to poor weather in other parts of the country, yet they really want Steve’s work.
