This is for the birds
About three weeks ago, I noticed that a bird had built a nest in one of my hanging plants on my front balcony. That was a very bad place since I use my balcony frequently for reading and eating, and also my CAT loves hanging out there! I kept an eye on it and about a week later, a mother bird had indeed laid four eggs in there. I decided to avoid my balcony for the time being and witness my own animal planet
.

What you see here is a day-by-day account of the RAPID development of four baby birds. Keep in mind, this has all happened in a little over a week! Anyone know what kind of birds these are?

I shot these using my little Casio Exilim digital camera through a narrow crack in my bamboo curtains. The babies don't notice me but the parents sure do. I have to remain very still for a very long period of time in order to capture them.

This was the first time that I could actually see the birds peeking up above the eye-line of the nest.

Even after just one day, the four baby birds seemed to grow enough to make them even more visible.

Fuzzier and bigger!

The babies are becoming more and more active. They eagerly await their mother's food. Finally in the fourth shot, I am able to photograph the mother from another window. I'm too visible in the main window to get a decent shot.

Today the young birds discovered their wings and started experimenting with them. The second shot shows both the mother and father paying a visit to their rapidly growing children.

More wing action but not enough to leave the nest just yet.

The birds have seemingly grown up overnight with a nearly full coat of feathers. After a week since their birth, they're already getting close to their parents' size. The third shot shows the mother feeding the kids once again.

The birds are getting way too big to be sharing a nest. They HAVE to leave it one of these days!

I woke up this morning to find only one bird in the nest. It was standing on the edge obviously getting ready to take its maiden flight. The other ones had already flown away. I managed to take one shot of the last bird before it quickly lept off into its destiny.

I waited about two hours to see if the family would return but ended up not seeing any sign of them. So I decided to go out on the balcony to start surveying what needed to be cleaned, etc. Ozzy even went out there to lay in the sun. About a half hour later, I heard a commotion. The birds were back. Apparently it's still their territory and decided to do some dive-bombs on Ozzy and I. We got out of there fast and closed the door behind us. Hopefully the birds will give up their old home soon so I can enjoy my balcony again.
